THE RICARDIAN is the historical journal of the Richard III Society (www.richardiii.net). Members receive the current year’s volume as a benefit of membership.

Volumes 3–25 are now available on this site as PDF downloads free of charge to all. In the future groups of volumes will be added to the online series after a minimum of five years.

This online scan of The Ricardian Volumes 3–25, October 1974 to 2015, was put together by James Petre, Anne F. Sutton, Christian Steer and Livia Visser-Fuchs, with technical assistance from Stephen York, Amanda Geary and Stewart Armstrong.

The Ricardian was established in 1961 as a newsletter with historical notes for members of the Richard III Society, and issued quarterly. Each issue had a number and its own pagination and its own contents page. An index to numbers 1–43, designated as volumes 1 and 2, was compiled in 1973. In 1974 certain changes were made and The Ricardian thereafter contained historical articles only.
  • Volume 3, numbers 44–51 (1974–75), was an A5 series of quarterly journals which contained only historical articles and notes. They contained respectively: 28, 28, 24, 28, 24, 24, 32, 36 pages.
  • Volume 4, numbers 52–63 (1976–78) contained respectively: 31, 32, 35, 36, 31, 28, 28, 36, 32, 32, 40, 43, pages. These two volumes had their own, joint index: 15 pages
  • Volumes 5–12 (1979–2002). The quarterly issues began to have continuous numbers and there were 12 issues to one volume. Volumes 5–6 have a joint index; thereafter all volumes were given their own index.
  • Volume 5 (1979–81): 456 pages.
  • Volume 6 (1982–84): 436 pages; index to vols 5 and 6: 28 pages.
  • Volume 7 (1985–87): 556 pages; index 20 pages.
  • Volume 8 (1988–90): 524 pages; index 25 pages.
  • Volume 9 (1991–93): 520 pages; index 27 pages.
  • Volume 10 (1994–96): 548 pages; index32 pages.
  • Volume 11 (1997–99): 636 pages; index 29 pages.
  • Volume 12 (2000–02): 604 pages; index 40 pages.
  • Volumes 13 onwards were issued as one volume a year; from volume 16 an index has been issued with the volume.
  • Volume 13 (2003): 431 pages plus 7 pages adverts, plus index.
  • Volume 14 (2004): 196 pages plus index.
  • Volume 15 (2005): 189 pages plus index.
  • Volume 16 (2006): 227 pages incl. index.
  • Volume 17 (2007): 186 pages incl. index.
  • Volume 18 (2008): 172 pages incl. index.
  • Volume 19 (2009): 202 pages incl. index.
  • Volume 20 (2010): 210 pages incl. index.
  • Volume 21 (2011): 152 pages incl. index.
  • Volume 22 (2012): 152 pages incl. index.
  • Volume 23 (2013): 147 pages incl. index.
  • Volume 24 (2014): 188 pages incl. index.
  • Volume 25 (2015): 143 pages incl. index.

The key articles from the early issues up to 1981 were combined into a separate volume to mark the year 1985, Richard III, Crown and People, edited by James Petre. All the article were reread and in some instances improved by their authors. It is therefore recommended to the browsers of this site that they consult this volume as well.
